Hair Care Questions
What are the benefits of using natural oils in my hair care routine?
Natural oils like olive, sweet almond, and jojoba are excellent for sealing in moisture, providing essential nutrients, and strengthening hair. They help to smooth the cuticle, add shine, and protect your hair from environmental stressors.
How often should I use a protein treatment for my natural hair?
For most natural hair types, a lightweight protein treatment once a month or once every other month is beneficial. This helps to strengthen hair strands, making them more resilient and less prone to damage.
What is the best way to detangle natural hair?
Detangling natural hair should be done with care to avoid breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle hair while it is wet and coated with a conditioner or a detangling product. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots, gently removing knots.
How can I reduce frizz in my natural hair?
To reduce frizz, avoid over-washing your hair, as this can strip natural oils. Always follow up with a good conditioner after shampooing. Incorporate natural oils into your routine and consider using a leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz serum. Also, avoid using heat-styling tools too frequently.
Which techniques are most effective for promoting increased hair growth?
Every person’s hair is unique, so some practices may work better for you than others. However, I recommend maintaining a well-balanced diet to ensure your body receives the essential nutrients needed for healthy hair growth. Incorporating nightly scalp massages with a quality oil is an easy yet effective way to stimulate blood flow to the scalp. You can find my DIY oil recipe in the Natural Hair Care Wisdom Flash Cards. Finally, using our Hydrating Herbal Hair Tea Rinse will help optimize scalp health, creating the ideal environment for hair growth.
Why am I having a hard time keeping my hair moisturized? My hair is so dry!
I highly recommend the PMP method (video below), a proven technique that helps you achieve deeply moisturized hair with longer-lasting results. For even more insight, be sure to watch the moisture cycle video to discover how often you should moisturize based on your unique hair type.
How do I know what porosity I am?
Low porosity hair typically takes longer to air dry on wash day and has a smooth cuticle. To check, gently slide a strand of hair between your fingers—if it feels smooth with no bumps, you likely have low porosity. In contrast, high porosity hair tends to dry quickly after being wet, and is more prone to frizz.. If you feel multiple bumps along the strand, your hair is likely high porosity.
What should my hair care regimen look like?
Here’s a good starting point for your hair care routine:
- Pre-poo with coconut, babassu, or palm kernel oil for at least 30 minutes on dry hair, then rinse.
- Shampoo with a moisturizing shampoo.
- Herbal Tea Rinse for scalp care and added hydration.
- Condition or deep condition your hair, detangle, then rinse.
- Apply a leave-in conditioner and style as usual.
- Moisturize daily or as needed, followed by a protective oil like avocado, sweet almond, or olive to seal in moisture.
- Protein and deep condition at least once a month or as needed.
How can I best protect my hair and scalp when getting braids, weaves, etc.?
Before getting your protective style, thoroughly cleanse your scalp and follow up with a deep conditioning treatment to prepare your hair. If your scalp is accessible while wearing the style, regularly apply a scalp serum or carrier oil mixed with tea tree oil to help prevent bacteria, dryness, and itchiness. Be sure not to leave the style in for longer than 5 weeks to maintain healthy hair and scalp.
Do you have resources where I can learn more about ingredients in hair care products?
Yes! I’ve created the Curly Girl’s Guide to Hair Care Ingredients and the Natural Hair Care Wisdom Flash Cards. You can find these ebooks and learn more about what’s inside.
What’s the best way to care for gray hair?
Gray hair needs TLC—tender, love, and care. Gray hair can be more brittle, dry, and lose elasticity, leading to breakage. I recommend deep conditioning weekly or at least biweekly and continuing with monthly protein treatments if needed. Daily moisturize and seal with a protecting oil like sweet almond, avocado, or olive oil. Hair supplements can also encourage healthier hair during this stage.
